Abstract
Before ferrous surfaces are vitreous enamelled they are given a coating of zinc or cadmium, e.g. by hot-dipping, and are heat-treated to cause the zinc or cadmium to diffuse into the ferrous metal thereby providing a surface which is substantially free of unalloyed zinc or cadmium, is corrosion-resistant, fixed and immobile, and to which the vitreous enamel is subsequently bonded. After the zinc or cadmium-coated ferrous surface has been heat-treated, a bond-promoting metal (preferably selected from Sn, Nb, Mo, Sb, Ta, V, Mn, Co, Ni, W and As) may be applied by deposition from the vapour phase or from solution; this may be prefired before the vitreous enamel grit is applied but in some cases the prefiring of the bond-promoting metal may be omitted. U.S.A. Specification 2,467,114 is referred to.
