Abstract

Steel work pieces are prepared for porcelain enamelling by cleaning and roughening the surface so as to produce deep, sharp-edged pits therein, immersing the roughened steel in an aqueous solution of a nickel salt containing sodium hypophosphite as a reducing agent whereby the nickel salt is reduced and nickel deposited on the steel without ion exchange between the steel and the solution, maintaining the immersion until the nickel deposit is about 0.1 to 0.2 gm. per square foot, washing, and drying, and a cover coat porcelain enamel which is substantially free of adherence promoting oxides is then fired directly on the coated surface (see Group XXIII). The surface may be prepared by chemical means and/or mechanical means, e.g. sand blasting. The chemical pickling baths which produce deeply etched surfaces may employ nitric acid with or without other acids, sulphuric acid containing nitric acid or other oxidising agents, or salts, e.g. FeCl3, which are readily reduced in the presence if iron. The preferred nickel deposit is 0.150-0.175 gm. per square foot, and 0.1625 is the most suitable. The baths for the chemical reduction of nickel may be alkaline, containing for example in grams per litre, nickel chloride 30, sodium hypophosphite 10, ammonium chloride 50, sodium citrate 100, and ammonium hydroxide to a pH of 8 to 10, or acid, composed for example in grams per litre of, nickel chloride 30, sodium hypophosphite 10, sodium acetate 10, the pH being 4 to 6 The steel is immersed for about one minute at about 70 DEG C., and then washed in warm water. The process for enamelling cold rolled steel is described.
