Abstract

A zinc or zinc alloy surface is cleaned by treatment with an aqueous alkaline solution free of silicates and then coated by treatment with a chromate-free aqueous alkaline solution having a pH > 11 and containing a metal that cannot exist as free cations in the alkaline solution but is complexed with an organic complexing agent, e.g. Mg, Cd, Al, Sn, Ti, Sb, Mo, Cr, Ce, W, Mn, Co, Fe or Ni, preferably both Co and Fe (added as nitrates) complexed with sodium hexahydroxy or b -gluco heptoate in NaOH solution. The cleaning solution, preferably having pH > 10 may contain alkali metal (Li, Na, K, Cs or Rb) hydroxide, phosphates, carbonates or borates, e.g. NaOH, Na2CO3, Na3PO4, Na2HPO4, Na4P2O7, K4P2O7 or Na tripolyphosphate, with or without aldonic acid material such as saccharic or (hepta) gluconic acid or salt thereof e.g. sodium gluconate, and/or a compatible surface active agent such as sulphonated fatty acid derivative or phosphate ester, and/or an alkylene glycol e.g. tripropylene glycol. For coating an article having both surfaces of zinc or zinc alloy and surfaces of iron or steel, e.g. a partly galvanized panel, the mixed surfaces are treated, e.g. by immersion, spraying or flowing, with the cleaning solution, then with the coating solution which coats the zinc and cleans the iron surfaces, then with an aqueous acidic zinc or alkali metal phosphate solution to phosphate coat the iron or steel surfaces. The coated surfaces may be given an aqueous CrO3 rinse.
