Abstract
1354217 Cleaning ferrous or zinc surfaces prior to phosphating AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc 28 Sept 1972 [30 Sept 1971] 44729/72 Headings C7E and C7U A ferrous or zinc surface is cleaned and activated prior to phosphating with an alkaline (pH not less than 10) solution containing a colloidal Ti salt, and from 0À3 to 15 g/l of a component consisting of an ortho and metasilicate with a polyphosphate and/or pyrophosphate. The ratio of metato ortho-silicate being from 1 to 5:1. The alkali may be sodium carbonate or hydroxide or trisodium phosphate. The solution may also contain wetting or foaming agents. After cleaning with the solution, and contacting with zinc phosphate, the surface may be given a chromate rinse. The zinc phosphating bath may comprise (by weight per cent) zinc oxide 12À2, nickel oxide 1À4, 75% phosphoric acid 58À0, sodium chlorate 3À8, water 24À6. Sodium nitrite may also be added.
