Abstract

1414484 Treating Zn surfaces PYRENE CHEMICAL SERVICES Ltd 14 March 1973 [3 May 1972] 20657/72 Addition to 1042108 Heading C7U Prior to phosphating, a Zn or Zn alloy surface is contacted with an alkaline (pH 9-13) solution containing cations of Fe, Ni or Co, complexed with an organic complexing agent. Suitable complexing agents are dicarboxylic acids, hydroxy carboxylic acids, polyhydroxy compounds, polyamino compounds, and amino carboxylic compounds, examples of which are gluconic acid, heptonic acid, citric acid, EDTA, and nitrilo triacetic acid. The metal cations may be introduced as the nitrate, sulphate or chloride of the metals, or as a compound with the complexing agent, e.g. ferrous gluconate, citrate or heptonate. The solution may be applied by dipping or spraying, and may contain an anionic or nonionic surfactant, e.g. a sulphonate or an ethylene oxide condensate with phenol, e.g. ethoxylated nonyl phenols. The surface may be degreased before treatment. The surface is phosphated in a bath containing Zn, Ni, PO 4 , NO 3 and F, rinsed, treated with CrO 3 solution, dried, and painted with epoxy powder.
