Abstract

1326146 Treating phosphatized surfaces AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc 24 Nov 1971 [2 Dec 1970] 54563/71 Heading C7U After phosphatizing, metal surfaces are subjected to an aqueous Zr rinse prior to any painting stage. The rinse solution contains a Zr compound to a concentration of at least 0À05 g/l (calculated as ZrO 2 ), the solution having a pH of at least 3, preferably 4-8À5. Suitable Zr compounds include alkali metal or ammonium fluorzirconates, zirconium carboxylates, e.g. Zr acetate, alkali metal or ammonium zirconium hydroxy carboxylates, e.g. di-ammonium zirconium glycolate, or ammonium zirconium citrate, and soluble complex salts of Zr. If impure water is used for the rinse solution, a complexing agent, e.g. gluconic acid, citric acid or their salts, may be used. The solution, which may also contain an organic wetting agent, e.g. sodium alkyl sulphonate or a sulphonated hydrocarbon, can be made up as a concentrate and diluted as required. Subsequently, the rinsed surfaces can be painted or enamelled. The metal surfaces can be Fe, steel, Zn, Al or their alloys.
