Abstract

1280260 Coating ferrous metal with copper CHUBB FIRE SECURITY Ltd 22 Dec 1970 [30 Dec 1969] 60913/70 Heading C7F The surface of a ferrous metal is plated with copper by contacting it with an aqueous acidic solution containing copper ions, halide ions, a polyalkylene glycol, and a dianiline compound having the formula:- where R is an alkylene group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, x is halogen or hydrogen and a is an integer from 0 to 2. The copper ions are preferably derived from copper sulphate and the pH of the solution maintained within the range 0 to 2. Before coating a steel wire, the wire is pickled in hydrochloric acid, rinsed in water, treated at 80‹ C. with an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide and alkali metal permanganate and then washed with water. After being coated with copper the wire is immersed in a lubricant composition comprising borax, soap and trisodium phosphate at 80‹C., dried at 180‹C. and drawn through two dies to reduce the diameter of the wire.
