Abstract
Uranium dioxide is made by first treating a uranium oxide, e.g UO2 or U3O8 in a fused salt bath, preferably of alkali metal halides, with dry oxygen and HCl gas, at 500-600 DEG C. and then electrolyzing the resulting uranyl chloride in the same bath at the same temperature in an inert atmosphere. The reaction chamber may be of heat-resisting glass which is not devitrified at the operating temperature. Preferably the salt bath is 41.5 mols per cent of LiCl and 58.5 mols per cent of KCl, or 20 mols per cent NaCl, 30 mols per cent KCl, and 50 mols per cent MgCl2. Water is removed by passing in dry HCl gas, and after adding powdered UO2, or a fissionable material containing UO2 or U3O8, oxygen is also admitted until deep red colour of UO2Cl2 is formed. Gases are cut-off, an inert gas admitted (HCl gas) and two graphite electrodes operating at 1.5V. are inserted. After several hours the cathode is removed and washed with tartaric acid solution to remove salts, and the UO2 crystals washed with alcohol/ether and dried. The product is UO2.04 to UO2.01.
