Abstract

Iron oxide which may be in the form of industrial waste products, is heated, preferably between 350 DEG and 1200 DEG C., with sufficient alkali-metal carbonate or hydroxide to form a ferrite; the ferrite is decomposed by treatment with water; washed with water until substantially free of alkali metal and is re-impregnated with 0.1-5.0 per cent of alkali metal salt and also brought to a suitable degree of subdivision, e.g. between 7 and 14 B.S. Test Sieve. The oxide may be used as a catalyst for the conversion of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into organic compounds and may include promoters such as copper or silver.
