Abstract
In the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide at pressures greater than three atmospheres and preferably greater than 8 atmospheres the catalyst is extracted, without shutting of the synthesis or recycle gas, with an oil which has been synthesised by the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide and which has been treated before use with an alkaline material. The process can be applied to any type of catalyst whether fixed bed, fluidised or as a slurry as described in Specification 845,559. The alkaline material may be an oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonia. The contacting with the oil may be by mixing or counter-current contact using an aqueous solution or, preferably, by trickling the oil over the solid. The oil need not be totally neutralised but preferably the amount of alkali is 10-50 times the stoichiometric amount for neutralisation. The neutralisation number, i.e. milligrams potassium hydroxide required to neutralise 1 gram of oil is preferably reduced to 3-20.
