Abstract

Hydrogenation catalysts are produced by treating mechanical or co-precipitated mixtures of carbonates and/or hydroxides of a catalytic metal (such as nickel, cobalt or copper) and of a carrier metal with carbon dioxide in an aqueous medium at 10-80 atmospheres pressure and 100 DEG -200 DEG C. and reducing the resulting carbonate mixture with hydrogen at elevated temperatures. The resultant catalyst comprises the catalytic metal on the carrier which is, e.g., an oxide or carbonate of magnesium or zinc, or the carbonate of calcium.ALSO:Aniline is obtained from nitrobenzene by hydrogenation using a Cu/CaCO3 catalyst, and cyclohexane from cyclohexene using a Ni/MgO, Ni/ZnO or Co/MgO catalyst, the catalysts having been prepared by treating with CO2, prior to reduction at elevated temperature, a co-precipitated or mechanical mixture of carbonates and/or hydroxides of the catalytic and carrier metals.
