Abstract
In the manufacture of sodium sulphide from sodium sulphate by reaction at 640-690 DEG C. with a reducing gas, e.g. hydrogen, one or more alkali metal carbonate is mixed as catalyst with the sodium sulphate. The carbonate may be mixed to the extent of 2-4% of the sulphate and ground therewith, formed into a paste with water and moulded into granules of e.g. 6 mms. diameter. The reaction in the presence of hydrogen takes place without fusion or agglomeration with sodium carbonate at 680-690 DEG C., with potassium carbonate at 675 DEG C. and with lithium carbonate at 640-650 DEG C. The reaction mixture should be in the form of an intimate mixture and may be mixed during the process or ground before reduction.
