Abstract

1287327 Catalysts for methanol synthesis METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 12 June 1970 [18 June 1969] 28680/70 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions C2 and C5] A catalyst for use in the synthesis of methanol from a gas mixture comprising hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide comprises (a) copper, (b) vanadium and (c) zinc and/or manganese, which metals are present in oxide form and in relative proportions such that, of the total number of atoms of such metals, copper constitutes 30 to 80 per cent, vanadium constitutes 1 to 25 per cent, and zinc constitutes 10 to 50 per cent and/or manganese constitutes 10 to 50 per cent. The catalyst may be prepared either by mixing an aqueous solution containing nitrates of copper and of zinc and/or manganese with an aqueous solution containing sodium carbonate and sodium metavanadate, separating the resulting precipitate and subjecting the precipitate to washing with water until free from alkali metal, drying and calcining at 300-500‹C or by mixing an aqueous solution containing nitrates of copper and of zinc and/or manganese with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate, separating the resulting precipitate, washing the precipitate with water until free from alkali metal, kneading the washed precipitate with vanadium pentoxide and subjecting the resulting mixture to drying and calcining at 300-500‹C. Exemplified catalysts contain, in atom percentages, 60Cu-10V-30Zn (Example 1), 50Cu-20V-30Mn (Example 2) and 60Cu-10V-20Zn-10Mn (Example 4), the catalyst of Example 1 being prepared by the former method and thereafter being compacted into 4x4 mm tablets and the catalysts of Examples 2 and 4 being prepared by the latter method.
