Abstract

1366367 Methanol synthesis catalyst BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 17 Nov 1971 [18 Nov 1970] 53341/71 Heading BIE [Also in Divisions Cl and C2] A catalyst for the methanol synthesis (see Division C2) is prepared by precipitating at a pH of 4.5-5.5 a compound of the mixed crystal series (Cu x Zn v ) Al 2 (OH) 16 .CO 3 .4H 2 O wherein x and y are numbers from 0.5 to 5.5 such that x+y=6, with an alkali metal carbonate and/or bicarbonate from an aqueous solution containing salts,' e.g. nitrates of Cu, Zn and Al in relative proportions sufficient to form the mixed crystal compound which is thereafter calcined, e.g. at 200‹-500‹C, and reduced, e.g. with a mixture of H 2 and N 2 at 150-350‹C. A continuous precipitation procedure is described. Examples describe the precipitation of the mixed crystal compounds (1) CuZn 5 Al 2 (OH) 16 CO 3 .4.H 2 O, (2) Cu 2 Zn 4 Al 2 (OH) 16 CO 3 .4H 2 O and (6) Cu 3 Zn 3 Al 2 (OH) 16 CO 3 . 4H 2 O which are dried, calcined, pelleted, may be with graphite, and then reduced.
