Abstract

Methanol is oxidatively dehydrogenated at 450-700 DEG C. to formaldehyde in the presence of silver crystals on a Cr-Ni steel support, optionally with a minor amount of Mo, Mn, Cu, Ti or Nb also present. The reaction may be effected in the presence of inert gases or vapours, e.g. steam.ALSO:Formaldehyde is made from methanol in the presence of silver crystals supported on Cr-Ni steel. Additionally the catalyst may contain Mo, Mn, Cu, Ti or N6.
