Abstract

The invention comprises the compound 3-chloro - 2,6 - dimethyl - oct - 1 - en - 8 - ol. The compound is prepared by reacting b -citronellol with chlorine in the presence of a base at - 50 DEG to + 100 DEG C. The compound of the invention may be converted to "rose oxides" in accordance with the following reaction sequences <PICT:1079421/C2/1> <PICT:1079421/C2/2> <PICT:1079421/C2/3> wherein compound (VII) is the compound of the invention, compounds (I) and (II) are "rose oxides", and the remaining compounds are intermediates.
