Abstract

1319417 Sodium sulphite recovery SONOCO PRODUCTS CO 13 May 1971 [14 May 1970] 14823/71 Heading C1A Waste liquor from a soda-based pulping operation, preferably after concentration in evaporator (1) to a solids content of from 25-70% by weight, is mixed in (3) with alumina or its hydrate and furnace ash comprising sodium aluminate derived via pulverizer (10) to give an Na 2 O : Al 2 O 3 molar ratio of 1 : 1 to 2 : 1 and to form a solid particulate mass and then the latter is combusted in furnace (7) at 1000‹ F. or above (e.g. 1500-2000‹ F.) but below the fusion point of sodium aluminate. Following the furnace operation, a portion of the furnace ash is recycled via (10) to mixer (3) and a further portion may be dissolved in water in (12) and the resulting solution mixed with bisulphite solution in reactor (17) whereby alumina or its hydrate is precipitated and normal sulphite remains in solution. After filtration in (20), the sulphite solution may be re-used in the liquor make-up for the pulping operation and the hydrated alumina may be recycled to the mixer (3). Some of the sulphite solution may also be contacted in absorber (22) with SO 2 derived from the furnace flue gas in order to produce the bisulphite solution used in reactor (17).
