Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a regenerated caustic soda soln. contg. no silicic acid by adding a specific amt. of milk of lime to a waste caustic soda soln., a by-product of a process for wet peeling castings, followed by heat treatment at above 60°C.
CONSTITUTION: Waste caustic soda (a) is stored in dissolution vessel 1 togehter with water (b) and dissolved with stirring to separation remove molding sand settled. The remaining soln. is shifted to reaction vessel 4, where milk of lime (d) is added contg. above twice as much CaO or Ca(OH)2 by mol as SiO2 contained in soda (a). The soln. is then heated to above 60°C and stirred with hot steam (c) blown, decomposing dissolved sodium silicate, and CaO.SiO2 formed is settled in clarifier 8 through cooler 7. Caustic soda soln. (e) overflowing from spout 9 is directly reused in peeling, and sediment (f) is dumped in a harmless state.
