Abstract
538,185. Refining cellulosic materials. HIGGINS, E. B. Oct. 20, 1939, No. 28345. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] Wood, straw, or the like non-textile vegetable material of cellulose having a low content of resin, lignin, and other impurities or pulp made therefrom is treated with a solution of caustic soda or other alkali in which is incorporated a dispersing agent and a quantity of a metal hydroxide capable of separating the resin matter and other accompanying substances from the material treated. The metal hydroxide added to the alkali solution may be aluminium or calcium hydroxide. Aluminium hydroxide or sodium aluminate may be added as such to the caustic soda solution or may be formed in situ by adding aluminium oxide or a soluble aluminium salt, e.g. the sulphate. The wood or other starting material may be subjected to a chemical pulping operation before being subjected to the process of the invention. Sulphite, sulphate, or soda pulps may be treated. The treated material is suitable for the production of artificial silk by the viscose, acetate, or other processes. The dispersing agent may be sulphonated castor or other sulphonated oil. In an example, a sulphite wood pulp is boiled under pressure with a solution of caustic soda, " Monopol soap (Registered Trade Mark), and sodium aluminate. It may subsequently be subjected to a bleaching treatment. Specification 339,850, [Class 2 (ii)], is referred to.
