Abstract
Raw or partially refined clays are purified by deflocculating a clay suspension by means of an alkaline extract of straw either alone or together with an alkaline electrolyte, e.g. caustic soda, sodium carbonates or silicates, or lime. The treated suspension is passed over " mica drags " and the effluent run into a settling tank in which the clay is thrown out of suspension by the addition of acid. The straw extract is made by steeping straw in a hot or cold solution of caustic soda, e.g. a 4 per cent solution at 150 DEG F. for 18 hours. The amount of added electrolyte may be of the order of 2 lb. /ton of clay.
