Abstract
300,603. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 16, 1927. Alkalies and hypochlorites, obtaining.-Brine for electrolysis, particularly in amalgam cells, is preliminarily purified from magnesium and calcium salts by precipitation with sodium fluoride. In an example 1.5 kg. of sodium fluoride is stirred into 1000 kg. of brine saturated with chlorine, containing 33 per cent of sodium chloride, 80 mg. of magnesium chloride and 180 mg. of calcium chloride per litre, and the product is filtered. The filtrate contains less than 10 mg. of magnesium hydroxide and less than 12 mg. of calcium hydroxide per litre. The purification and electrolysis may be worked as a continuous operation.
