Abstract
Activated carbon is rendered more capable of absorbing water vapour by impregnation with solutions of the hygroscopic and dehydrating agents calcium, zinc or magnesium chloride, sodium sulphate, potassium carbonate or glycerine in the maximum proportion of 30 parts of dehydrating agent to 600 of carbon. In operation, the previously activated carbon is impregnated with a solution of one of the above dehydrating agents, the impregnation being effected in the cold or at boiling point and at atmospheric or reduced pressure. After impregnation, the carbon is dried at a temperature not exceeding 200 DEG C. Regeneration may be effected by heating in air or in vacuo or by or in a current of hot gas, e.g. air at 150 DEG C. Solutions adapted to form the dehydrating agent may be employed, e.g. solutions of calcium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), comprises also the use of iron and aluminium chlorides, copper sulphate and sulphuric and phosphoric acids. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
