Abstract
The deleterious effect on active carbon of the impregnation by a chemical agent is minimized or prevented by using during the activation the reagent, or an equivalent substance, with which it is proposed to impregnate the activated carbon. The same result is attained by effecting a second heat activation after the impregnation. Impregnation may be effected by another body which during activation will yield the desired compound, e.g. a salt the decomposition or reduction of which will leave an oxide; the salt may be applied in solution. An example is given of impregnation by caustic soda or potash or both, the impregnated carbon being dried and heated to 600 to 700 DEG C. After being cooled, the carbon is moistened by spraying with water or by the passage of steam. Sodium or potassium carbonate may be formed during the operation or may be added to the impregnating liquid. The carbon so prepared is particularly efficacious in the treatment of phosgene.
