Abstract

1 : 4-Dichlor-2-hydroxybenzene carboxylic acid, 1-chlor-4-methyl-2-hydroxybenzene carboxylic acid and 1-methyl-4-chlor-2-hydroxybenzene carboxylic acid are made by treating the dry alkali metal salt of the parent hydroxy-compound with carbon dioxide under pressure. In examples, 1 : 4-dichlor-2-hydroxybenzene, 1-chlor-4-methyl-2-hydroxybenzene or 1-methyl-4-chlor-2-hydroxybenzene are dissolved in caustic soda or potash and evaporated; the cold dry powder is then treated with carbon dioxide under pressure in an autoclave and the temperature is increased; after cooling the mass is dissolved in hot water and filtered, the acid precipitated by hydrochloric acid and filtered off. It can be further purified by dissolving it in sodium carbonate or acetate and reprecipitation by acid. As the resultant acids all give a violet colouration with ferric chloride they are presumed to have the carboxylic group in the 3-position.
