Abstract
Washed and cleaned glauconite is subjected to a dehydrating heat treatment under reducing conditions at 450--750 DEG C. and then digested with caustic alkali of concentration greater than 15 per cent, whereby its base-exchanging capacity is increased permanently. The reducing agent for the heat treatment may be hydrogen, town gas &c., but preferably the glauconite is mixed with heavy commercial fuel oil and subjected to direct flame heating at 535--650 DEG C. Hot caustic soda solution of 35 per cent strength is preferably used for the digestion, which may be effected at boiling point. With more dilute solutions, temperatures above boiling point may be used under pressure. Sodium silicate may be added to the caustic soda, which is used for successive batches of glauconite and periodically purified and brought back to the desired strength. The surfaces of the treated glauconite may be stabilized by successive treatment with dilute solutions of alkali silicate and of an acid-reacting salt such as aluminium sulphate.
