Abstract
Raw cotton linters are purified by treatment with strong aqueous alkali of a concentration equivalent to 5-15 per cent caustic soda at a temperature substantially above the boiling point of the solution and under steam pressure above atmospheric pressure. This treatment may be followed by treatment with available chlorine. Caustic soda solution may be used at a temperature of about 260 DEG F. for 3-4 hours to 390 DEG F. for 10-30 mins. under the corresponding steam pressure. The digestion may be performed in the presence of 0.4 per cent to about 1.2 per cent turkey red oil or other detergent. Use of a hypochlorite is preferred as bleaching agent. In an example, raw cotton linters are digested in 7.5 per cent aqueous sodium hydroxide at 275 DEG F. under steam pressure of 30 lbs. per square inch for three hours, washed and subjected to a series of aqueous hypochlorite treatments, washed and dried. Cellulose derivatives prepared from cellulose purified as above have improved clarity and filterability.
