Abstract

Transparent effects are produced on fabrics of regenerated cellulose by subjecting them first to a parchmentizing treatment with a swelling agent and then to a treatment with a solution of an alkali hydroxide at a temperature between 15-20 DEG C., the alkali being removed as quickly as possible by, for example, washing with hot water. Suitable parchmentizing agents are solutions of sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, zinc chloride and calcium thiocyanate. Suitable alkali hydroxides are those of sodium and potassium. Local transparent effects are obtained by first printing the fabric with a reserve which if desired may be dyed or pigmented. In the examples viscose muslin or regenerated cellulose staple-fibre is parchmentized with a solution of sulphuric acid containing, in one case urea, and, in another case, formaldehyde, at low temperatures. In one example a solution of phosphoric acid is employed as parchmentizing agent. The subsequent alkali treatment is effected with an aqueous solution of caustic potash and in one example, caustic soda. In one example the fabric is primarily printed with a reserve comprising titanium dioxide, acetylcellulose, acetone, phenol and water. Specification 577,233 is referred to.
