Abstract
The water imbibition of regenerated cellulose fibres or staple fibres is reduced by impregnating them with a substantially neutral aqueous solution containing formaldehyde, an organic acid, and a sulphate or chloride of an alkali metal or magnesium, and thereafter drying and heating them. Formaldehyde may be employed in the form of its monomer, or of a polymer such as paraformaldehyde. Specified organic acids are lactic and tartaric acids, and specified sulphates and chlorides are those of sodium potassium and magnesium. Numerous examples are given, in one of which viscose rayon staple is immersed in an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde solution previously neutralised with caustic soda, lactic acid and common salt. The wet fibres are hydroextracted, dried at 70 DEG C. in a current of air and finally heated at 135 DEG C. for 30 minutes. Specifications 25647/06, [Class 2], 9196/15, [Class 2 (ii)], 426,956, 447,651, 471,988 and 500,184 are referred to.
