Abstract

Fabrics containing high twist cr<\>zepe yarns of an organic ester of cellulose are treated with an agent having a hydrolysing or saponifying action on the cellulose ester yarns, and are thereafter treated with a cr<\>zepeing bath. The treatment with the hydrolysing or saponifying agent, e.g. hydrochloric acid, formic acid, oxalic acid, caustic soda, caustic potash, or sodium carbonate, may be sufficient to cause a loss in weight of the materials of 20 to 30 per cent, but is preferably insufficient to destroy the affinity of the materials for cellulose ester dyestuffs. After the treatment, the fabric is preferably dried and washed with warm water or soap solution prior to being subjected to the cr<\>zepeing treatment. For the latter, a treatment with a hot aqueous soap solution at a temperature of at least 80 DEG C. may be used, and the steps of hydrolysing or saponifying, drying, washing, and cr<\>zepeing may be carried out continuously. In order to preserve the lustre of the fabrics, particularly after using caustic soda or sodium carbonate in the saponifying treatment, a salt or sugar, e.g. ammonium sulphate or cane sugar may be incorporated in the cr<\>epeing bath. Specifications 437,019, 438,589, 438,590, and 438,591 are referred to.
