Abstract

324,358. Hankey, J. L. Oct. 24, 1928. Fireproofing.-Vegetable or silk fibre is treated with a solution comprising a chromate or bichromate of a fixed alkali and a sulphoxylate compound, in the absence of ammonia, and then aged. Increased quantities of chromium are thereby absorbed and the fibre made fireproof. The fibre may be subsequently treated with known water soluble fireproofing compounds, such as ammonium sulphate or phosphate, sodium tungstate, borax or boric acid. In an example, a solution of sodium bichromate containing dilute caustic soda and a solution of formosul are mixed, dry bleached cotton treated therewith, and the fabric then aged with moist steam, rinsed and dried. To remove alkali, the fabric may be finally rinsed in dilute acetic acid. Glucose and glycerine may be added to the bath to render the solution stable. Britulite and the compounds having the Registered Trade Marks " Rongalite " and " Hydraldite " are also mentioned as sulphoxylates that may be used. Specification 117,715, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], is referred to.
