Abstract
290,421. Storer, T., and Taylor, C. J. A. April 9, 1927. Ferric oxide.-A solution of a ferrous salt which has been added a non-gaseous oxidizing agent such as manganese dioxide, with or without the addition of lime or calcium carbonate, is subjected to heat and pressure, the precipitated ferric oxide after washing and drying being suitable for use as a pigment. Galvanizers' or Enamellers' waste liquors neutralized by the addition of scrap iron may be employed in the process, which may be carried out in a steel an@- clave fitted with an inner vessel of acid-resisting fireclay or in an iron autoclave lined with acidresisting enamel. In an example the reaction is effected at 300‹ F. in a closed glass tube. The solution of manganese chloride obtained may be treated for recovery of manganese dioxide for further use in the process. In a modification the ferrous salt solution and manganese dioxide are allowed to react at normal temperature, the separated precipitate being then heated under pressure.
