Abstract
Magnesium oxide suitable for removal of oxides of sulphur from waste gases from fuel furnaces is obtained by heating a mixture of magnesium sulphate and an alkali metal chloride in the presence of steam to a temperature of 600-700 DEG C., and treating the residue with water to dissolve the alkali sulphate formed. The hydrochloric acid evolved is cooled and recovered as a concentrated solution. Two mols. of alkali metal chloride are used per mol. of magnesium sulphate, and the latter is partly or wholly dehydrated before the mixture is treated with steam.
