Abstract

Clay or the like is treated with hydrochloric acid so as to obtain a crude solution of aluminium chloride. The iron is reduced, for instance by sulphuretted hydrogen, and the solution is then evaporated and the residue calcined to decompose the aluminium chloride while excluding oxygen so that the ferrous chloride is not decomposed. The solution may be sprayed into a tower or rotary tube furnace where it comes in contact with hot gases having a reducing character, obtained for instance by flameless combustion. The residue is leached with water containing a little hydrochloric acid which dissolves the ferrous chloride, leaving alumina practically free from iron. The alumina may be further purified by heating in a current of air containing chlorine or hydrochloric acid to remove the remaining iron. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes the use of other mineral acids, for instance sulphuric acid may be used followed by sodium chloride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
