Abstract

238,663. Cachemaille, A. S., (Westing- house Lamp Co.). July 7, 1924. Dry processes of extracting refractory metals.-Metals, particularly refractory metals such as uranium, zirconium, thorium, vanadium, tantalum, chromium, and titanium, are extracted from their oxides by heating, in a closed vessel from which oxygen and nitrogen are excluded, a mixture of the oxide with an alkaline earth or alkali metal. For example, a mixture of uranium oxide, calcium, and calcium chloride may be pressed into cakes 11 and heated in a vessel 2 lined with pure lime 7, a piece of calcium 13 being placed on the top cake to combine with residual air. The products are removed by a drill or disintegrated with water, the metal being repeatedly washed with water, dilute acid, and alcohol.
