Abstract

300,271. Kali-Chemie Akt.-Ges., (Assignees of Rhenania-Kunheim Verein Chemischer Fabriken Akt.-Ges.). Nov. 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Zirconium sulphite and oxide.-The solutions obtained by the treatment with hydrochloric acid of the product of heating zirconium ores in admixture with quicklime and carbon are treated with sulphurous acid, or a sulphite, or bisulphite of an alkali or alkaline earth metal to precipitate basic zirconium bisulphite which is converted into the oxide by heat. The ore decompositionproduct may be first treated with sulphurous acid to form a solution of calcium bisulphite, and the latter be used to precipitate the zirconium from the solution in hydrochloric acid of the residue from the sulphurous acid treatment. Treatment of the solutions in hydrochloric acid with sulphurous acid &c. is preferably effected at normal temperature, the zirconium being then precipitated by gradual heating; and when a normal sulphite is used as precipitant, the solution to be treated mav be acidified.
