Abstract
Fatty acids are produced by treating paraffins, such as paraffin wax, ceresin, or montan wax, with air or oxygen at a pressure of several atmospheres in presence of an alkali, alkaline earth, or alkaline carbonate. The paraffin is heated to about 150 DEG C. in a conical vessel fitted with a regulable outlet valve which maintains a pressure of 3-6 atmospheres within the vessel. Air or oxygen, preferably pre-heated to 120-150 DEG C., is blown through the paraffin for 12-20 hours. The air is preferably previously freed from moisture and carbon dioxide. Small quantities of substances rich in oxygen, such as barum peroxide or lead peroxide, may be added as catalysts. When the oxidation is completed, superheated steam is blown into the vessel and the product healed under pressure with water to effect complete saponification. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the oxidation may be performed without the addition of alkali. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 12806/84.ALSO:Soaps are produced by treating paraffins, such as paraffin wax, ceresin, or montan wax, with air or oxygen at a pressure of several atmospheres in presence of an alkali, alkaline earth, or alkaline carbonate.
