Abstract

Products having germicidal and fungicidal properties are obtained by treating tanning extracts with a halogen or a substance giving rise thereto. Oak-bark extract is treated with chlorine, for example, preferably until the yellow precipitate obtained has a chlorine content of at least 10 per cent. The product may be subsequently treated with an oxidizing agent, such as chloric acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the production of such products by the halogenization of plant extracts in general, and describes, in an example, the chlorination of sulphite-cellulose lye to produce a reddish-yellow precipitate which may be subsequently treated with an oxidizing agent, such as chloric acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Products having germicidal and fungicidal properties are obtained by treating tanning extracts with a halogen or a substance giving rise thereto.
