Abstract
Waste chrome leather is subjected to an oxidizing treatment to convert the chromium to the hexavalent form preferably by heating with barium peroxide in an autoclave. The barium chromate and sulphate are separated from the glue liquor and treated with sodium bisulphate or sulphate or with sodium sulphate and sulphuric or hydrochloric acid whereby sodium chromate is obtained. Waste chrome tanning liquor is treated with barium chloride or hydrate or a lead or strontium salt to obtain an insoluble chromate which is separated and treated with sodium bisulphate or with sodium sulphate and sulphuric acid to obtain sodium chromate. Specifications 12834/84 and 5676/11, [Class 76, Leather], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes the treatment of chrome residues from other industries such as the colour industry. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
