Abstract
Insecticidal, fungicidal, and bactericidal compositions are produced by oxidizing petroleum hydrocarbons, such as Sharples wax, rod wax or normally liquid hydrocarbons, with air or oxygen in the presence of a catalyst in liquid phase and at a raised temperature not above 155 DEG C. and a pressure of 150--350 pounds per square inch until incipient precipitation of compounds insoluble in the reaction mixture is indicated in a test sample, completely saponifying the saponifiable compounds by addition of aqueous alkali &c., removing the unsaponified compounds (alcohols and ketones) by treatment with a solvent immiscible with water, and dispersing the saponified compounds in a liquid. The products contained in the saponifiable fraction are stated to be saturated monocarboxylic acids having from 4 to 15 carbon atoms and when saponified and extracted as above stated are accompanied by a minor proportion of non-acidic ketonic compounds. A suitable catalyst for the reaction is manganese oleate, or unsaponifiable compounds from a previous reaction may be used. The saponifying agent may be an alkali or ammonia.ALSO:Insecticidal, fungicidal, and bactericidal compositions also suitable for treating skin diseases are produced by oxidizing petroleum hydrocarbons, such as sharples wax, rod wax or normally liquid hydrocarbons, with air or oxygen in the presence of a catalyst in liquid phase and at a raised temperature not above 155 DEG C., and a pressure of 150-350 pounds per square inch until incipient precipitation of compounds insoluble in the reaction mixture is indicated in a test sample, completely saponifying the saponifiable compounds by addition of aqueous alkali &c., removing the unsaponified compounds by treatment with a solvent immiscible with water and dispersing the saponified compounds in a liquid. The products contained in the saponifiable fraction are stated to be saturated, hydroxylic ketonic acids having from 4 to 15 carbon atoms and when saponified and extracted as above stated are accompanied by a minor proportion of non-acidic ketonic compounds. A suitable catalyst for the reaction is manganese oleate, or unsaponifiable compounds from a previous reaction may be used. The saponifying agent may be an alkali or ammonia.
