Abstract
Fluorinated organic compounds are made by reaction of hydrogen fluoride on a compound containing at least 10 carbon atoms and one or more aliphatic double bonds but no triple bond. Suitable compounds are decylene, oleic acid, ricinenic acid (obtainable by splitting off water from ricinoleic acid), and oleyl alcohol. Inert solvents such as methylene chloride or carbon tetrachloride may be present. The insoluble products can be used in the form of emulsions as adjuvants in the textile industry or as fungicides and insecticides. The fluorinated carboxylic acids and alcohols can be transformed into soluble derivatives and used as fungicides or insecticides or in making disinfecting soaps. In examples: (1) an oleic acid solution is treated at about 10 DEG C. with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride to give fluorostearic acid; (2) oleyl alcohol and linseed oil fatty acid are fluorinated in the same way; (3) oleic acid solution and aqueous (90 per cent) hydrogen fluoride are reacted at 0--10 DEG C.; (4) and (6) undecylenic acid solution is treated with gaseous hydrogen fluoride 25--35 DEG C., or with liquid hydrogen fluoride to give fluoroundecanic acid; (5) a solution of undecylenic acid methyl ester is reacted at 0--5 DEG C. in a closed iron vessel with hydrogen fluoride. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of (1) fluoro-stearic acid nitrile prepared by treating a solution of oleic acid nitrile with hydrogen fluoride at -5 to 0 DEG C.; (2) fluorododecane made by treating n-dodecylene as in (1). Specification 406,284 is referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the treatment of a compound containing at least 4 carbon atoms and aliphatic double bonds. Butadiene is specified. An additional example describes the treatment of an olefine obtained by cracking and containing mainly heptylenes, in solution in ether, with hydrogen fluoride at 0--10 DEG C.ALSO:Fluorinated carboxylic acids and alcohols, made by reaction of hydrogen fluoride on acids or alcohols containing at least 10 carbon atoms and one or more aliphatic double bonds but no triple bond, are converted into water-soluble derivatives and used in making disinfecting soaps. Fluoro - stearic acid, fluoro - stearyl alcohol, and fluoro-undecanic acid are made by treatment of oleic acid, oleyl alcohol, and undecylenic acid respectively. Ricinenic acid (obtainable by splitting off water from ricinoleic acid) and linseed oil fatty acid are also specified as starting materials.
