Abstract

The invention comprises a process for the preparation of a water-soluble complex salt of chromium and of a carboxylic acid containing more than three carbon atoms, by reacting a gaseous hydrogen halide, an alkali metal chromate (or bichromate), a carboxylic acid containing more than three carbon atoms or a substance yielding such an acid under the conditions of the reaction, and an alcohol or aldehyde, in the presence of an organic solvent, preferably an alcohol or a halogenated hydrocarbon. Specified carboxylic acids include saturated and unsaturated aliphatic and isocyclic acids, e.g. fatty acids, resin acids, naphthenic acids, benzoic acid, naphthoic acids, crotonic and other methacrylic acids, and heterocyclic acids, e.g. furane carboxylic acid and indolyl acetic acid; as substances which can yield carboxylic acids under the conditions of the reaction are the corresponding aldehydes, alcohols and esters. The quantity of chromate should be sufficient to provide from 1-10 atoms of chromium per molecule of carboxylic acid. The alcohol or aldehyde (included in the reaction mixture to reduce the chromium to the trivalent state) may be methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, paraldehyde, glucose, glycol monochlorhydrin, a polyhydric alcohol, higher alcohol or higher aldehyde. In examples: (1) dry hydrogen chloride is passed into a refluxing mixture of stearic acid, sodium bichromate, ethyl alcohol and carbon tetrachloride until saturated, the solvent evaporated, and the residue taken up in boiling isopropyl alcohol and filtered to eliminate sodium chloride, giving a solution useful for waterproofing fabrics. (2) As in (1), replacing stearic acid by palmitic acid, abietic acid, or cetyl palmitate. (3) As in (1) omitting alcohol and replacing stearic acid by palmitate oil, Japan wax (tripalmitin) or octadecyl alcohol. (4) Sodium bichromate in ethanol is saturated with hydrogen chloride, stearic or lauric acid added, and mixture kept at 70 DEG C. until it is water-soluble, then diluted with alcohol and filtered. Potassium bichromate gives similar results.
