Abstract

Starting from ethylhexaldehyde, this is first condensed with acetone in the presence of alkali to produce an undecyl ketol (5-ethyl-4-hydroxy-nonanone-2). Upon acidifying the reaction mixture, and raising the latter to the boiling point, unsaturated undecyl ketone (5-ethylnonen - 3 - one - 2) is formed, which is separated by fractionating under reduced pressure; the formation and fractionation may proceed concurrently. The undecyl ketone is hydrogenated under pressure and at 20--200 DEG C. to give an undecyl alcohol (5-ethylnonanol-2) and at the same time a saturated ketone, 5-ethylnonanone-2, both of which are solvents for nitrocellulose and other lacquer materials and can be separated from each other by fractionation. The alcohol is converted to its acid sulphate, for example, by gradual addition to a mixture of sulphuric acid and acetic anhydride at 0--10 DEG C.; or other anhydrides may be used, or in place of these the acids themselves or the acid chlorides. From the sulphate, the sodium salt is formed by neutralization with caustic soda, although other salts may be formed by using for the neutralization, compounds of other alkali or alkali earth metals, or ammonia, the ethanolamines and the ethylene amines. The condensation and hydrogenation may be carried out in the liquid or vapour phase. The sodium salt of undecyl monosulphate is a wax-like solid having strong wetting and foam-producing properties, suitable as a textile lubricant, wetting agent and frothing agent.
