Abstract

Condensation products are prepared from mineral oils containing paraffinic and non-paraffinic components, e.g. lubricating oils boiling above 400 DEG F., by subjecting to the action of a silent electric discharge a non-paraffinic concentrate obtained by the extraction of the oil with a liquid consisting solely of a solvent having a preferential solvent action on the non-paraffinic components of the oil. The products may be used as lubricating oils, or may be added to other oils to raise the viscosity thereof, to inhibit oxidation, or to depress the pour point. The non-paraffinic concentrate may be mixed with other oils, e.g. mineral oils which are less paraffinic than the oil from which the concentrate is prepared, synthetic glycerides, or animal, vegetable and fish oils, of the nature of esters, prior to or during the voltolization. The addition of sulphur or soluble sulphur containing compounds to the concentrate before voltolization increases the effectiveness of the product as an oxidation inhibitor. In examples: (1) a lubricating oil obtained by the distillation of crude petroleum is extracted with phenol, the extract mixed with rapeseed oil and the blend voltolized; (2) an extract obtained as in example (1) is heated with flowers of sulphur before blending with the rapeseed oil; (5) a burning oil fraction is extracted with liquid sulphur dioxide, the extract is destructively hydrogenated and the product mixed with a refined lubricating oil distillate, the blend being then heated with flowers of sulphur and voltolized.
