Abstract

Lubricating-oils especially for use in internal-combustion engines are mixed with a small amount of an ester formed with an alcohol containing at least 10 carbon atoms and an acid containing less than 10 and preferably less than 6 carbon atoms. Alcohols specified are: lauryl, phenyl octadecyl, stearyl, cetyl, oleyl alcohol; alcohols derived from wool fat, or by the reduction of animal, vegetable or fish oils; or obtained by treating cracked paraffin wax or petroleum oils with sulphuric acid and then hydrolyzing the product; or alcohols obtained by direct oxidation of hydrocarbons using boric acid as catalyst. High molecular polyalcohols such as 7--18 stearylene glycol obtained by hydrogenating castor oil and alcohols substituted with amino-, halogen and sulpho groups are suitable. The preferred acid component is formic or acetic acid, but other preferably aliphatic saturated or unsaturated or hydroxy low molecular acids may be used such as are obtained in paraffin wax oxidation; or aromatic or naphthenic acids. Lubricating oils used are petroleum oils which have preferably been refined by clay, acid, solvent extraction, or hydrogenation and may contain fatty oils. White oils and untreated distillates which may be totally dewaxed or not are also suitable. Dyes, voltolized oils, pour point depressants, lead tetraethyl or tetra phenyl or the corresponding compounds of tin, mercury, bismuth, arsenic, or antimony may be added together with oxidation inhibitors such as aromatic mercaptans, thio ethers, disulphides or polysulphides.
