Abstract

553,140. Lubricants. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Nov. 3, 1941, No. 14131. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1940. [Class 91] A lubricating oil composition comprises a mixture of a waxy mineral lubricating oil, a small amount of a synthetic pour depressor, and a small amount of a natural substance extracted from a spent clay used for treating lubricating oil stock, which substance has the property of rendering the lubricating oil more sensitive to the action of the pour depressor. The " pour sensitizer " may be obtained from the spent clay by percolating therethrough at room temperature a naphtha solution of a part of the waxy oil or a waxy fraction to be used in the final blend and then removing the solvent by evaporation ; the material is not removed by naphtha alone which merely washes the residue free from oil. Alternatively, selective solvents may be used alone such as benzene, acetone, ether, isopropyl alcohol,. and ethylene dichloride, preferably hot but below 150-200‹ F. The solvent is removed by evaporation, and in this method of working the " pour sensitizer " is contained in the black viscous oil remaining which is then mixed with the waxy oil or a waxy fraction to be used in the final blend. The amount of extract added to the oil ranges from 0.01 to 1.0 per cent. by weight on the finished lubricating composition. The spent clay is one which has been used for treating crude cylinder oil stock or crude petroleum distillation bottoms, such as a Pennsylvania crude, a Colombia crude of the naphthenic base type, or a mixed base crude; the clay exemplified is Attapulgar clay. Any synthetic pour depressor may be compounded in the final composition, a Friedel-Crafts condensation product being preferred such as the product obtained from chlorinated paraffin wax, of 10 to 15 per cent. chlorine content, and naphthalene in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride. The preferred proportion ranges from 0.01 to 10.0 per cent. by weight on the finished lubricant. The waxy lubricating oil preferably comprises a blend of a bright stock and a neutral oil. Illustrative examples are given which show that whereas with the addition of a synthetic pour depressor alone to a typical lubricating oil blend, in the concentration of 0.1 per cent., reduces the pour point from 30‹ F. to 15‹ F., yet with the further addition of the " pour sensitizer," in the concentration above specified, the pour point is reduced to - 10‹ F. Specifications 479,479 and 511,207, and U.S.A. Specifications 2,018,758, 2,055,482, 2,087,682, 2,106,247, 2,115,823, 2,128,109, and 2,201,767 are referred to.
