Abstract

The coating and adhesive properties of bituminous road oils with respect to mineral aggregates are improved by incorporating with the oils small quantities of substances consisting of high-molecular, saponifiable or neutralisable, organic acids or derivatives thereof, such as solid fatty acids, e.g. stearic acid, montan wax, Carnauba wax, solid resins, acid oxidation products of paraffin wax, other waxes, fatty oils, resins and the like, or fractions separated from such oxidation products, especially fractions containing oxy-acids, or other substances containing oxy-acids. The use of liquid higher fatty acids, such as oleic acid, is excluded. The oils treated are bituminous oils liquid at ordinary temperatures, and include cut-back bitumens, heavy mineral oils and mineral oil residues. The amount of added substances is preferably from 1 to 2 per cent, and in general not more than 5 per cent.
