Abstract

Lubricants are prepared by adding to a mineral lubricating oil or grease small amounts of high molecular weight polycarboxylic acids obtained by the condensation of maleic acid anhydride with alkenes or alkene mixtures boiling above 250 DEG C., or subsequent hydration of the product. The alkenes or alkene mixtures may be obtained by cracking or dehydrogenating hydrocarbons of high boiling point, or mixtures thereof, such as paraffin wax.ALSO:Polycarboxylic acids are prepared by condensing maleic acid anhydride with alkenes or alkene mixtures boiling above 250 DEG C., and hydrating the product. The alkenes or alkene mixtures may be obtained by cracking or dehydrogenating hydrocarbons of high boiling point, or mixtures thereof, such as paraffin wax.
