Abstract

In a process for separating paraffin or other wax from chilled oil by means of a rotary suction filter in an atmosphere of chilled gas the use of filter aid is rendered unnecessary by treating the oil with solvents in which the wax is insoluble at low temperatures or with solvents of low viscosity which give crystalline wax on chilling. A mixture of acetone and benzol with or without toluol is mentioned as an example of the first class of solvents and propane as one of low viscosity. Other materials which are stated to modify the crystalline character of the wax and thus increase the rate of filtration are a pitchy residue from a cracked cycle fuel, the distillation residue of a condensation product of naphthalene in the presence of aluminium chloride, as described in Specification 437,779, the condensation product of a chlorinated wax with aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of aluminium chloride, mineral oil distillation residues and coal-tar residues. Such materials are added in a proportion of from 13 to 6 per cent of the weight of the wax-bearing oil.
