Abstract

In the manufacture of synthetic lubricating-oils by the condensation of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons of high molecular weight with benzene or its homologues, the chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon is first mixed with the aromatic hydrocarbon in the absence of a condensing-agent, the mixture is cooled to cause the separation of solids, which are removed, and the residual liquid is then subjected to condensation in the presence of a condensing agent, if desired after the addition of a further quantity of the aromatic hydrocarbon. In examples: (1) a mixture of chlorinated paraffin wax, containing 22 per cent chlorine, with benzene is cooled to -5 DEG C., the solids separating are filtered off, more benzene is added and the mixture is heated with aluminium chloride; (2) more benzene is employed in the first stage of (1) and the cooling is carried to -10 DEG C.; (3) chlorinated paraffin wax containing 26 per cent chlorine is mixed with benzene and the mixture is treated as in (2); (4) a mixture of chlorinated paraffin wax, containing 13 per cent chlorine, with benzene is cooled to -2 DEG C., the solids separating are filtered off and the residue is first stirred and then heated with aluminium chloride; (5) paraffin wax of 25,4 per cent chlorine content is treated as in (2). Chlorinated shale waxes are specified as additional starting materials, and boron fluoride, anhydrous ferric chloride and metallic aluminium as additional condensing agents. Specification 417,659 is referred to.
