Abstract
In making lubricating-oils by condensing an aromatic hydrocarbon with a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon of high molecular weight in the presence of Al or AlCl3 as catalyst, the product is treated with an amount of water less than, or not greatly exceeding, that theoretically required to convert the AlCl3 present to Al(OH)3, and is heated to a temperature above 200 DEG C., and the oil isolated by filtration, extraction or decantation. If Al is used, the HCl liberated during the condensation transforms some or all of it into AlCl3. The preferable temperature is 250 and 300 DEG C. The condensation product may be allowed to separate into two layers, one or both of which may be treated with water. Instead of water, a hydrated metal salt such as BaCl22H2O, CnSO45H2O or Na2SO410H2O may be used the amount of salt necessary being deduced from its water content. In an example, 1000 parts of chlorinated paraffin wax containing 29,3 per cent Cl are reacted with 1000 parts of benzene and 90 parts of anhydrous AlCl3. After separation into layers, the lower layer is treated with water or Glauber's salt to convert most of the AlCl3 to Al(OH)3. On distilling off the benzene, a red-green fluorescent oil can be decanted from the granular residue.
